OWNER

Dr. Kristine E. Galek area of expertise is with assessment and intervention of swallowing disorders and paradoxical vocal fold movement. Dr. Galek is the owner of Appalachian Pediatric Therapies and InScopeMobileDx and the co-owner of AZTEC, a continuing education company that is an American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) approved continuing education provider. Dr. Galek is also an ASHA approved CE provider and course designer.

Dr. Galek and InScope employees act as private individuals in offering services, and not on behalf of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). UNR is not a party to providing any of the services offered by the company, and UNR is not liable for any of the actions of InScope Mobile Dx (InScope) employees in engaging to perform contracted services.

Does the FEES procedure hurt?

No, the procedure does not hurt. Sometimes people report that it is uncomfortable, but most of the time, when the exam is done correctly, patients do not seem to notice any discomfort. Many patients we have examined will say things like "That's it?" or "Oh, that wasn't so bad!"
Are your procedures safe?

Yes, although there are always risks with any procedure. The risks with the FEES procedure are minimal. Patients may not be appropriate for the examination if they are severely agitated, have a cardiac disorder, history of vasovagal episodes (fainting), history of epistaxis (nosebleeds), recent facial trauma, or obstructed nasal passages. All of these may result in complications during a procedure.
Do you use any anesthesia during the procedures?

No, we do not recommend the use of anesthesia as it may affect the reliability of the swallow study. We can, if desired, use a non-anesthetic lubricant through the nose if necessary.
